{"id":8522,"date":"2023-01-04T10:09:38","date_gmt":"2023-01-04T10:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtx.co.uk\/?p=8522"},"modified":"2023-01-04T10:09:38","modified_gmt":"2023-01-04T10:09:38","slug":"volunteers-help-disadvantaged-communities-in-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mtx.co.uk\/volunteers-help-disadvantaged-communities-in-peru\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers help disadvantaged communities in Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<nav aria-label=\"breadcrumbs\" class=\"rank-math-breadcrumb\"><p><span class=\"last\">Home<\/span><\/p><\/nav><h2>Construction company volunteers help disadvantaged communities in Peru and raise more than \u00a311,000 for Stockport charity<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b89;\"><strong>Young professionals from healthcare construction specialist MTX have helped disadvantaged communities in Peru and at the same time generated more than \u00a311,000 for Stockport County Community Trust.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Katie Wiseman and Ben Statham worked as volunteers with local teams for 2 weeks in Cusco in southern Peru upgrading the SOS Centre which provides healthcare and community support.<\/p>\n<p>After announcing their plans, the pair also organised a sponsored virtual fitness challenge which soared past the \u00a37,500 target to raise more than \u00a311,000 for the Trust\u2019s Social Well-Being Programme which helps adults in South Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers from MTX were tasked to walk, run and cycle 1200 kilometres across Peru \u2013 the equivalent of travelling from the eastern mountain border to the west coast.<\/p>\n<p>Stockport County Community Trust Manager Dave Wardle said: \u201cKatie and Ben\u2019s success in raising more than \u00a311,000 with the Peru Challenge is a fantastic boost for our free Social Well-Being Programme. It brings together vulnerable individuals, their families, carers, and friends to teach life skills, reduce stigma, and improve quality of life by building self-esteem and confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While in Peru trainee quantity surveyor Katie (aged 21) and junior project engineer Ben (20) turned their hands to painting, tiling, plastering and installing drainage and toilet facilities.\u00a0 They lived with a local family which gave them a down-to-earth perspective on the country and its people.<\/p>\n<p>Katie explained: \u201cLocal people were so welcoming and really appreciated the fact that we had volunteered to help.\u00a0 Many of the people there are very poor, but they brought us gifts of food and were very patient in the way they communicated with us, because very few spoke English and we knew little Spanish, the local language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben added: \u201cOne of the most impressive aspects of the team we partnered was the ingenuity that made the most of very limited tools and resources available to them, and the way they solved problems to press on and complete the work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MTX Managing Director David Hartley commented: \u201cKatie and Ben\u2019s volunteer work in Peru was a fantastic commitment, but we\u2019re all aware that communities within the UK also desperately need support.
