Bradford Royal Infirmary

In January 2014 MTX contracts were awarded the contract to design, install and commission a new four storey modular extension. The project was completed within a 48 week period.

The Requirements

The Bradford Royal Infirmary required a new endoscopy decontamination unit and goods lift.

The Solution

A four storey extension above an existing physiotherapy gym at the Bradford Royal Infirmary site was agreed. The extension was constructed using modular techniques providing a compliant decontamination facility for endoscopes fitted out on the top floor. Two intermediate floors of the new building were delivered as shell units for future use and a plant room was provided on the top floor. The scheme was installed via individual, mobile cranes, each suitably sized and sourced for the varying installation constraints. The installation period was a challenging and well planned operation over a period of four days to lift/position each building.

Internally the hygienic areas were finished with a steridex hygiene wall coating. The floor coverings consisted of vinyl sheeting from the Polyflor range which included a barrier matting and an epoxy resin finish.

Externally the new modular building has been finished with alucobond rain screen cladding.

Main considerations

The new endoscopy decontamination unit is located in a busy area of the Bradford Royal Infirmary. The close proximity of the hospital mortuary to the project site highlighted an additional need for consideration ensuring that construction works were carried out with a high level of courtesy and respect. Minimising disruption to the hospital site was a fundamental requirement of the project. To help achieve this requirement, MTX registered the project with the Considerate Construction Scheme, a national initiative set up by the construction industry. Members of the scheme agree to abide by the Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements.
