Cumberland Infirmary - Urgent Treatment Centre

MTX has completed a new £12m Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, providing a modern facility designed to ease pressure on the adjacent Accident and Emergency Department. Delivered for North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, the single-storey building forms part of a wider programme of investment to improve urgent care capacity in Carlisle, helping to streamline services and reduce demand on emergency departments.

The UTC includes 12 consultation rooms, dedicated ancillary accommodation for staff and patients, and separate waiting areas for adults and children to improve patient flow and experience. A rooftop plant room supports the building’s mechanical and electrical services, ensuring resilience and operational efficiency. The facility will also accommodate Cumbria Health’s out-of-hours GP services, offering a more integrated approach to urgent care provision.

Constructed using modern methods of construction, the project was delivered faster, safer and more sustainably than traditional building approaches. A total of 21 structural steel and services modules were manufactured offsite while groundworks progressed, significantly reducing programme duration and on-site disruption. MTX worked closely with hospital teams to maintain ambulance access and uninterrupted patient routes to A&E, drawing on extensive experience of delivering complex projects within live hospital environments.
