SI Group - Research and Development Laboratories

The MTX Platform Approach

The MTX platform-based construction method employs a standardised kit of parts designed for ease of installation, offering a flexible and repeatable design suitable for a wide range of building types. This approach minimizes waste, accelerates installation, and reduces transportation needs; contributing to lower CO  emissions. The system is built on a repeatable grid and incorporates reusable formwork, standardised columns, integrated foundation-to-superstructure support details, and a 2D floor-to-roof cassette.

Pre-Manufactured Value 70%

MTX has delivered a purpose-built Research and Development (R&D) laboratory for SI Group at Four Ashes, near Wolverhampton. MTX provided a full suite of services including architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical design, as well as construction and fit-out.

The 600m² single-storey facility houses four specialist laboratories - Analytical, Applications, NDB, and NMR - alongside office space and ancillary areas. Constructed using MTX’s platform approach and Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), the building was manufactured offsite to ensure consistent quality, shortened delivery timelines, and minimal disruption to the operational industrial site.

The design utilises a simple, efficient layout to enhance workflow and laboratory functionality. Sustainability features include a roof-mounted solar PV array, while a robust air handling and filtration system, supported by external ground-level plant, ensures compliance with stringent air quality standards required for specialist lab environments.

This facility enables SI Group to relocate its European R&D operations from Manchester, reinforcing its commitment to innovation in performance additives, process solutions, and chemical intermediates across Europe.
