MTX delivered a two-phase theatre development at Wrightington Hospital, providing two state-of-the-art operating theatres and expanded recovery facilities to enhance the Trust’s orthopaedic capacity. The scheme began as a single-theatre project; however, during completion of the initial groundworks for Phase 1 (Theatre 11), additional funding from NHS England’s Targeted Investment Fund (TIF) became available. The Trust instructed MTX to proceed with a second phase (Theatre 12), enabling delivery of a twin theatre configuration to maximise value and programme efficiency.
To accommodate this change, MTX carried out a full redesign of the MEP infrastructure to ensure coordination between both phases. The revised design allowed shared plant and service distribution while maintaining operational resilience. Phase 1 was installed in April 2024 and opened in October 2024, followed by Phase 2 in July 2024.
The new suite integrates seamlessly with existing theatres delivered by MTX in 2013, providing an additional 5 recovery bays and supporting around 1,200 additional procedures annually Both theatres feature ultra-clean laminar flow systems to minimise infection risk and accelerate patient recovery. Modern Methods of Construction were applied throughout, with factory-built structural steel units and pre- manufactured M&E modules enabling rapid, high-quality delivery with minimal disruption to live clinical services.
As part of their committment to social value, MTX also funded a new outdoor garden area for staff to enjoy. The new space includes picnic tables and benches surrounded by plants, with views of the countryside around the hospital.
Having two new theatres at Wrightington Hospital will enable us to efficiently and safely manage an increased number of day case surgical patients for the foreseeable future. This is fantastic news for our patients locally, across Greater Manchester and beyond. A huge thank you must be given to all involved in delivery this new development.
