MTX have delivered a new NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and refurbished SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit) and HDU (High Dependency Unit) to Birmingham City Hospital.
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust had a requirement to refurbish and extend their current neonatal department to expand capacity which would allow them to treat more pre-term babies.
Working with architectural partners RPS and combined consulting engineers RPS and DSSR, MTX provided a 180m² single storey offsite extension to house a 6 cot NICU, nurse base, quiet room and staff office. The scheme included new dedicated external plant and connects into the existing via 2 new links.
In addition to providing the new offsite facility, MTX also refurbished the hospital’s current SCBU 1 & 2, HDU and supporting ancillary areas.
MTX commenced with the offsite phase of the project first. The current SCBU and HDU remained live and operational throughout the groundworks and building install. Due to the sensitive nature of the facility, noise control was extremely important. MTX utilised acoustic barriers against the windows and ensured acoustic control around machinery was in place at all times.
As well as the acoustic measures being taken externally, the internal noise levels were also monitored throughout the groundworks process to ensure levels were kept to a minimum and within the required standard. A daily quiet period was also introduced.
Once the building landed, the existing SCBU and HDU were temporarily relocated to a suitable ward so the refurbishment works could begin in parallel to the fit out of the new NICU. The project was completed in just 20 weeks and handed over in December 2019.
