A purpose-built state-of-the-art Research and Development (R&D) laboratory for SI Group has been designed and delivered by MTX Contracts Ltd at Four Ashes, near Wolverhampton.

The 600m² single-storey European Innovation Centre (EIC) houses four specialist laboratories - Analytical, Applications, NDB, and NMR - alongside office space and ancillary areas.

SI Group is a leading global developer and manufacturer of performance additives, process solutions, and chemical intermediates. The new facility marks an important expansion of SI Group’s global innovation network, strengthening R&D and application development and reinforcing its commitment to innovation across Europe

MTX provided a full suite of services including architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical design, as well as construction and fit-out.

Constructed using MTX’s platform approach and Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), the building was manufactured offsite to ensure consistent quality, shortened delivery timelines, and minimal disruption to the operational industrial site. The design utilises a simple, efficient layout to enhance workflow and laboratory functionality.

The MTX platform-based construction method employed a standardised kit of parts designed for ease of installation, offering a flexible and repeatable design suitable for a wide range of building types. This approach minimizes waste, accelerates installation, and reduces transportation needs, contributing to lower CO emissions.

Sustainability features include a roof-mounted solar PV array and a robust air handling and filtration system, supported by external ground-level plant, that ensures compliance with stringent air quality standards required for specialist laboratory environments.

The EIC is equipped with advanced tools and resources to support a wide range of research activities. With a focus on plastics and rubber application development as well as analytical characterization, the new facility will serve as a collaborative hub for addressing technical challenges and driving sustainable innovation in partnership with customers and industry leaders.

MTX Contracts Ltd Managing Director David Hartley said the new SI Group facility demonstrated the effectiveness of creating high quality facilities using modern methods of construction and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles. “MTX is recognised for the excellence with its work creating new facilities for the NHS and is constantly pushing the boundaries to create purpose-built assets designed around the needs of clinicians and patients. The project for SI Group demonstrates that the same sound principles of modern construction methodology, combined with meticulous project management and design, can equally benefit other sectors through the creation of facilities such as research and development laboratories.”
