MTX Contracts starts work on Pitsea Diagnostic Centre

8 Jan 2026

MTX Contracts Ltd has begun work on site to build the largest Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in mid and south Essex at Pitsea, using Modern Methods of Construction to deliver the project faster, greener safer and more cost effectively.

The two-storey CDC is due to open in spring 2027 and will play a vital role in improving access to health services; reducing waiting times across the region by providing more than 130,000 extra health checks each year. It will include an eight-room endoscopy suite and offer X-rays, CT and MRI scans, and other health checks.

The new CDC will also be a key wellbeing hub for the community, offering a range of services including a purpose-built activity centre and a community library.

Precisely engineered structural steel modules are being factory-manufactured offsite while groundworks are underway, and electrical and mechanical modules will be factory-tested before delivery for assembly to accelerate the build, reduce costs and improve quality.

MTX Managing Director David Hartley explained: “We are delighted to be partnering with the Trust in creating this vital new facility for local communities. Our MMC build process ensures high quality outcomes and is underpinned by our own proven design and project management skills. Those combined elements bring projects into use sooner to benefit patients and staff, and ensure an earlier return on investment for the Trust.”

The project is a collaborative initiative between Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Essex County Council and Basildon Council. The Pitsea CDC is being developed on the former site of The Place and Pitsea Library.

The milestone was celebrated at a groundbreaking ceremony on site, attended by members of MTX, the local MP James McMurdock, councillors, and community representatives.

James Currell, Acting Divisional Director for Clinical and Support Services at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The Pitsea Community Diagnostic Centre will provide around 120,000 additional scans and appointments each year, making it easier for people to access vital tests, reduce waiting times, speed up results and support faster treatment.” James McMurdock, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, welcomed the development, saying: “It's great to see real progress being made on the Pitsea Community Diagnostic Centre. When it opens in 2027, it will be a major asset for Pitsea and the wider Basildon area, and it will play an important role in improving local health services across Essex.”
