Luton & Dunstable University Hospital Theatres and Recovery Wards
In July 2015 MTX were successfully awarded the contract to design and build a new modular operating theatre complex. The building was completed and officially handed over to the Trust on 31st March 2016.
The aim at the outset of the scheme was to provide additional operating theatre and recovery capacity in order to allow the trust to remove a temporary hired theatre facility. The project is part of an early phase of construction for a prestigious site wide development at the hospital.
The new facility comprised of two theatre suites, first stage and second stage recovery and ancillary areas. The new modular theatre complex was situated on the edge of the site adjacent to the existing theatre department. The new extension was linked into the hospital building via 2 small link ways at ground floor level with a stand-alone first floor plant room and external HVAC plant.
The installation period was a challenging and well planned operation over a period of two weekends. Full design including building layout, building specification and all building services installation and specification was carried out by the MTX team adhering to the HTM’s, HBN’s NHS specifications and clients requirements. Externally the new modular building has been finished with a Plastisol panel system to stay in keeping with the adjacent hospital modular buildings thus providing a clean and easily maintainable modern finish.
Capital cost and programme were key considerations for this scheme. Following a number of value engineering options, ranging from external finishes to mechanical engineering solutions offered by our team and accepted by the trust we were able to meet our clients initial budget.
Albeit one key challenge we met during the construction was the mechanical service infrastructure. The new modular construction was scheduled to be complete prior to the mechanical infrastructure being in place. Effective collaborative working with the trusts team really aided our processes ensuring a temporary solution was put in place to allow the facility to operate. Whilst operating on a temporary arrangement we supported the trust in providing a new mechanical plant room adjacent the new theatre suite.
